Profile correction and chin correction

A slightly prominent or “flat” chin can seriously disturb the profile line of an otherwise attractive appearance. When looking in the mirror, this often goes unnoticed, but when looking at a profile picture, people with a so-called chin hypoplasia perceive their appearance as out of tune: the face is too flat and the chin lacks prominence or contour.

An attractive profile is characterized by balanced, coordinated proportions, such as the forehead, nose, lips and chin. Distinct deviations of any part, such as the chin region, may lead to an asymmetry of the whole face. If our patients feel impaired because of their double chin or a receding chin, we recommend a profile or chin correction.

Achieve an attractive side profile after chin correction

With a correction, e.g. chin enlargement, we can make your chin fit in proportion to the mouth, nose and forehead, giving your face an overall aesthetic image. An additional positive effect can be achieved by lifting the neck skin, or an improvement (= strengthening) of the neck-chin angle, which exhibits a “young” profile.

With our experience and knowledge of various surgical methods, we can help to considerably increase your well-being and self image.

We are happy to assist you at our clinic in Munich for individual and detailed information in a personal consultation. When we know your wishes and expectations, we are in a position to plan and carry out a procedure tailored to your specific needs.

Dr. von Spiegel is happy to be here for you!

What will a chin correction do for you?

A facial profile is perceived as attractive when the nose is straight, the lips are full, the chin is well contoured and the areas are all in proportion with each other: forehead, nose and finally mouth and chin should each occupy approximately one third of the face. If the proportions are not correct, a profile correction may be necessary.

There are multiple reasons for a profile correction. For example, if the size and shape of the nose are not as desired, we recommend a nose correction or the so-called rhinoplasty; If the neck does not fit the aesthetic overall picture, neck surgery is possible.

Surgical correction of receding chin

If a patient has a strongly receding chin, plastic and aesthetic surgery offers the possibility of a chin correction. When this is established, we usually enlarge the chin with an implant (silicone or hydroxyapatite).
This is a relatively small procedure with little potential for complications, but high efficacy, because chin augmentation not only improves the profile, but also enhances the neck-chin angle, which in turn increases youthfulness and attractiveness.

If the receding chin is connected with a fat accumulation below the jawbone, the so-called double chin, we correct this per liposuction possibly in combination with a neck lift.

What should be considered before a profile correction?

In your first consultation with us at the Nymphenburg Clinic for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery in Munich you tell us your wishes and expectations for a chin correction. After a structured analysis of your facial and neck area, we create a tailor-made treatment plan based on our in-depth knowledge of anatomy and a variety of surgical techniques, and provide comprehensive information on procedures and risks.

The face (with its various aesthetic units) must always be considered as an overall picture. The exclusive treatment of only one subarea can lead to an unnatural and unbalanced result.

Various methods can be adoped. If the neck alone is affected, extracting only excess fat (double chin) may be sufficient to improve the contour. In the case of a receding chin, you may require an enlargement of the chin per a silicone implant or, depending on your findings, a bone advance on the chin.

With 2-D simulation, you can try different silicone implant sizes and shapes before deciding on a chin shape. This enables you to clear up uncertainties and get a rough idea of what to expect.

In order not to unnecessarily increase the risk of postoperative bleeding, the use of aspirin should be avoided in the two weeks prior to the operation. The consumption of alcohol and nicotine should also be reduced to a minimum.

Procedure for a profile correction

After the preliminary discussion, the incision plan and important marking points will be drawn with you in a standing and sitting position in accordance with the plan worked out together with you.

A local anesthetic is then administered to the chin area. The twilight sleep, will cause you to lose full consciousness. As infection prophylaxis, you will also receive a single dose of a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

For the chin correction, the incision is made on the inside of the lower lip. From there, the bony chin area is exposed, with our focus on protecting the sensitive nerves (nervus mentalis). The actual chin correction is then carried out by using the implant, which is fixed with bone screws. Finally, we stitch the mucosa with self-dissolving stitches. An outer bandage is not necessary.

This type of operation can take place on an outpatient or inpatient basis at thee Dritter Orden Clinic.

After your profile correction

After chin correction surgery, you need to present at our clinic the following day. Over the subsequent months, regular inspections will follow at our Nymphenburg Clinic for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery.

Shortly after the operation you may experience some pain which can be managed with painkillers (ibuprofen with stomach protection).

Cooling also reduces the pain and swelling that occur as a result of every facial procedure. Obtain several cooling elements before the procedure and keep them refridgerated. These however should not be placed directly on the skin.

In the first few days after surgery, it may be nice to sleep with your upper body slightly raised. Sporting activities, sauna and swimming should be avoided for four weeks.

Possible complications and risks

Even with this procedure complications are possible, but generally very rare.

Swelling and minor bruising are normal after a chin correction, but disappear after a certain amount of time: the most significant swelling after 6 weeks, bruising usually after 2-3 weeks.

Temporary numbness in the operating area is normal. As a rule, the feeling returns within a few weeks. Very rarely it can take more than a year for the feeling to return or it be permanent.

Infections resulting in removal of the implant, are extremely rare.

Occurance of asymmetries is also rare. To avoid them, precise operation planning and preparation is very important to us.

As a rule, our patients are very satisfied with the result of  chin corrections and leave our Nymphenburg Clinic for Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery with renewed self-confidence.
