Excessive sweating - hyperhidrosis – Hyperhidrose - Nymphenburger Praxis für Plastische & Ästhetische Chirurgie

Excessive sweating - hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweat production is extremely uncomfortable and stressful for those affected. Hyperhidrosis can affect multiple regions of the body. In the most severe cases, there is such pronounced sweat production that the hands and feet are dripping wet. But even lighter cases, for example, where there is a slight increase in sweat production under the arms, can be very stressful. In addition to the feeling of being dirty, there can be unpleasant stains under the arms, especially during social events.

Botox or surgery

Basically, there are a variety of treatment options for the individual appearances of hyperhidrosis and the affected regions on the body. With very heavy sweating in particular under the arms, treatment with botulinum toxin or surgical therapy is very promising.

Botulinum toxin is also used to treat hyperhidrosis

Most patients think about wrinkle treatment when they think about Botox treatment. In terms of aesthetics, the substance is an indispensable anti-wrinkle filler. But this neurotoxin is also an excellent option in the treatment of excessive sweating. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin that is naturally produced by bacteria under air exclusion. Botulinum toxin is a protein that blocks the transmission of the nerve signal to the effector. This not only blocks the transmission of signals from the nerves to the muscles, but also the signal transmission to the sweat glands.

Because botulinum toxin is a relatively large protein, it does not migrate into the body when injected into the skin, making it suitable only for local application. Especially if only the axillary region is affected, treatment with botulinum toxin is an excellent treatment option.

In order to ensure a treatment of the entire sweat nidus, this is marked with an iodine dye. In addition, a grid with a mesh size of 1x1cm is drawn for orientation. Up to 20 intracutaneous injections may be necessary for successful therapy. For pain reduction ointments with local anesthetics are suitable.

In the treatment of local sweating, especially under the arms, botulinum toxin is an excellent option and superior to other therapies, even in severe cases. An operation can be dispensed with in many cases. The injection treatment is rather uncomfortable for most patients. However by using anesthetic ointments or ice spray, the treatment can be well tolerated.

Repeated treatment necessary

Unfortunately, the success of the therapy does not last. After an average of half a year, the effect disappears slowly and a renewed treatment is necessary. The therapy is usually at your own expense.

In severe cases with local hyperhidrosis under the arms, surgery may be necessary if all other therapies have proved unsuccessful. Removal of sweat glands is only possible in the armpits. The operation is similar to liposuction. With a special instrument, the suction curette, the sweat glands are removed directly under the skin and simultaneously suctioned.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques

In the first step, a so-called tumescent solution containing a local anesthetic is introduced via very small skin incisions (minimally invasive). After the anesthesia has taken affect, the affected areas are treated. The surgery shows lasting success, but it can lead to a loss of armpit hair. In rare cases only, the operation must be repeated. We perform this small procedure at our clinic in Nymphenburg, Munich.

Possible side effects

In addition to bruising, wound healing disorders can occur. Scarred strands or nodules can also be an unwanted consequence of the surgery. However, numbness is rare and usually not permanent.
